“When once you have tasted flight, you will always walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.”
– Leonardo da Vinci

The exhibition “Machines of Leonard da Vinci” shows the versatile genius of the painter of “Mona Lisa”, who was hundreds of years ahead of his time and is an inspiration for modern engineering. Most of the machines and devices that we use in everyday life, could not work without the inventions designed by the master, such as: flywheel, ball bearing, crankshaft, ratchet mechanism, chain and many toothed gears as well as transmissions.
The exhibition consists of 55 models, faithful replicas made by skilled Italian craftsmen on the basis of original Leonardo da Vinci sketches and projects. The reconstructions were made by using only those materials that were applied in the Renaissance period.

The presented objects can be divided into several thematic categories:

Flying machines, e.g.: helicopter, parachute, ornithopter… Leonardo was a tireless researcher of the mysteries of nature. A significant part of his efforts was focused on finding an answer to the question: What physical conditions would allow a person to rise easily into the air? His fascination with flying can be divided into two periods: between 1482 and 1499 (the first Milan period) and from 1503 until the end of his life.
War machines, e.g.: tank, bombard, ogival bullets… Da Vinci designed many fortresses and war machines mainly on the orders of the then rulers. However, as he was a pacifist, the war stirred him up with disgust….

Interactive objects, e.g.: cam hammer, ball bearing, flywheel… Interactive objects provide a unique opportunity to experience on one’s own the functioning of these Renaissance inventions that were far ahead of their time…

Other exhibits, e.g.: bicycle, arch bridge, hygrometer… Leonardo left countless notes, designs and sketches on about seven thousand pages. At the exhibition you can admire many objects reconstructed on their basis.

Paintings, e.g. „Mona Lisa”, „Lady with an Ermine”, „The Last Supper”… This part of the exhibition offers the opportunity to enjoy faithful replicas of Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous paintings. The best known work of art is “Mona Lisa”. As early as around 1510 it caused a sensation, because no painting has been that realistic so far. It was believed that it resembled a living body rather than paint.
