The exhibition came into being through the efforts of the Italian historic association Associazione Ricercatori Storici from Verona. It includes displays of over 50 reconstructions of instruments that were collected by private collectors and historians in Germany, Poland, Italy and Spain. These include famous contraptions such as the Interrogation Seat, the Witches Chair, the Rack and the notorious Iron Maiden.

The exhibition displays the story of instruments and practices used in Medieval history and beyond (from 16th until 19th century) in Western Europe to extract information from those suspected of wrongdoing. It includes more than 50 exhibits with illustrations and descriptions and is displayed with great visual impact. Besides cognitive virtues it entails deep reflection and it encourages the audience to take a second view of the human nature. The exhibition has been showcased over the last 20 years throughout Europe. Throughout its history, the exhibition has never failed to achieve success wherever it has been shown as demonstrated both in local media and in public attendance figures.

Over 50 reconstructions of torture instruments that can be divided in 3 groups:
◉ public humiliation as a form of punishment
◉ to cause physical pain
◉ to execute capital punishment

At the exhibition one will find:
◉ 16-18 free standing exhibits
◉ 19-22 exhibits in showcases
◉ 10-12 exhibits on pedestals or exhibits that can be hung on panels or walls
◉ about 100 illustrations and descriptions with frames

We would like people who visit the exhibition to leave it more aware of the existence and application of all means of coercion in society, whether they merely read about it in the pages of history or face up to its presence in the world today.

Torture has been carried out or sanctioned by individuals, groups and states throughout history from ancient times to present day. In the 21st century torture is prohibited under international law and the domestic laws of most countries as a violation of human rights.
